Rina Cáceres

Dr. Rina Cáceres 

Rina Cáceres holds the Chair in African and Caribbean Studies (Cátedra de Estudios de Africa y el Caribe) at the University of Costa Rica and is a specialist on the history of African descendant populations in Central America and the Caribbean. She serves as Representative on CONARE, the Rector's National Committee on the University, the National Commission of Afro-Descent Studies of the Ministry of Public Education in Costa Rica, and the UNESCO "Slave Route" Project.

She is the author of Negros, mulatos, esclavos y libertos en la Costa Rica del siglo XVII (2000) and editor of Rutas de la esclavitud en Africa y América Latina (2001) and co-editor of Haiti Revolucion emancipación (2008). She edited, From Oblivion to Memory. History of Afro-Descendant People in Central America during the Colonial Period, which is collection of materials for teachers in five volumes (2008-2010). She has been awarded the Costa Rican National Prize, Aquileo Echeverria (History), and the Ricardo Caillet-Bois (History) from the Pan American Institute of Geography and History of the Organization of American States for her studies on Afro-Descendent people in Costa Rica.

Rina Cáceres est titulaire de la Chaire en études africaines et caribéennes (Cátedra de Estudios de Africa y el Caribe) à l’Université du Costa Rica et est une spécialiste de l’histoire des populations afrodescendantes en Amérique centrale et dans les Caraïbes. Elle siège actuellement au CONARE, sur le Rector’s National Committee on the University, le National Commission of Afro-Descent Studies of the Ministry of Public Education du Costa Rica, ainsi que le projet La Route de l’esclave de l’UNESCO.

Elle est l’auteure de l’ouvrage Negros, mulatos, esclavos y libertos en la Costa Rica del siglo XVII (2000), éditrice de Rutas de la esclavitud en Africa y América Latina (2001) et coéditrice de Haiti Revolucion y emancipación (2008). Elle est de plus éditrice de la collection pour enseignants, en cinq volumes, From Oblivion to Memory. History of Afro-Descendant People in Central America during the Colonial Period (2008-2010). Rina Cáceres est récipiendaire du Prix national du Costa Rica, Aquileo Echeverria (Histoire) et le prix Ricardo Caillet-Bois (Histoire) du Pan American Institute of Geography and History of the Organization of American States pour ses recherches sur les peuples afrodescendants du Costa Rica.

Del olvido a la memoria - Oblivion to Memory. History of Afro-Descendant People in Central America includes four volumes and a teaching supplement aimed at teachers in primary and secondary schools throughout Central America. She has held over 400 workshops for teachers under the auspices of UNESCO that advocate the inclusion of the history of Afro descendants in the curriculum in all schools. Copies of the collection were presented to participants.

Del olvido a la memoria — Oblivion to Memory. History of Afro-Descendant People in Central America comprend quatre volumes ainsi qu’un complément éducatif destiné aux enseignants dans les écoles primaires et secondaires au travers de l’Amérique centrale. Sous l’égide de l’UNESCO, elle a organisé plus de 400 ateliers pour les enseignants, préconisant l’inclusion de l’histoire des afrodescendants dans le cursus de toutes les écoles. Des exemplaires de la collection ont été offerts aux participants.


Cátedra de Estudios de Africa y el Caribe

The Chair in African and Caribbean Studies mounts a program of research and outreach aimed to promote a better understanding of the contributions of people of African descent in the history and culture of Costa Rica through research, the identification of historic sites, and support for cultural and community creativity. The Program of the Chair has published several books, organized conferences and workshops throughout Central America, has supported cultural activities on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, and served in an advocacy role in policy discussions with various government ministries in Costa Rica and other countries in Central America.

La Chaire en études Africaine et Caribéennes mène un programme de recherche et de sensibilisation qui vise à promouvoir une meilleure compréhension des contributions, à l’histoire et la culture du Costa Rica, des peuples de descendance Africaine, grâce à la recherche, l’identification de sites historiques ainsi qu’un support pour la créativité culturelle et communautaire. Le programme de la Chaire a mené à la publication de plusieurs livres, à l’organisation de conférences et d’ateliers au travers de l’Amérique centrale et a appuyé des activités culturelles sur la côte caribéenne du Costa Rica en plus de jouer un rôle stratégique dans les discussions politiques avec différents ministères du Costa Rica et d’autres pays de l’Amérique centrale.

These bi-annual symposia highlight diversity and  the problems of racism, discrimination, access to citizenship, and the contributions of African descendants to the formation of contemporary societies. They are organized under the auspices of Cátedra de Estudios de Africa y el Caribe and the Harriet Tubman Institute. The proceedings are being published by the University of Costa Rica Press.

Ces symposiums biannuels mettent en lumière la diversité et les problèmes de racisme, de discrimination et d’accès à la citoyenneté, ainsi que les contributions des descendantes et descendants africains à la formation des sociétés contemporaines. Ils sont organisés sous l’égide du Cátedra de Estudios de Africa y el Caribe et du Harriet Tubman Institute. Les contributions sont publiées par les presses de l’Université du Costa Rica.
